Types of Hydraulic Cylinders

There are various types of hydraulic cylinders, which can be classified in different ways. Based on the motion mode, they can be divided into linear reciprocating motion and rotary swinging. Based on hydraulic pressure action, they can be categorized into single-acting and double-acting types. Based on structure, they can be piston type, plunger type, multi-stage telescopic sleeve type, rack and pinion type, etc. Installation forms include tie rods, earrings, feet, hinge shafts, etc. They are also classified based on pressure levels such as 16Mpa, 25Mpa, 31.5Mpa, etc

    Piston Hydraulic Cylinder

Piston hydraulic cylinders come in single rod and double rod types. They are fixed according to the cylinder tube and piston rod. Based on hydraulic pressure action, they are categorized as single acting or double acting. In a single acting cylinder, pressure oil is supplied to only one cavity, enabling movement in one direction. Movement in the opposite direction is achieved by external forces like spring force or dead weight. Double acting cylinders move in two directions through hydraulic pressure acting on alternating oil in two chambers.

    Plunger Hydraulic Cylinder

Plunger hydraulic cylinders are single-acting, meaning they can only move in one direction with hydraulic pressure. The return stroke relies on external forces or the plunger’s own weight. The plunger is supported solely by the cylinder liner, making it easy to process and suitable for long-stroke cylinders. It must have sufficient rigidity as it remains under pressure during operation. Due to its weight, the plunger may sag when placed horizontally, causing uneven wear on seals and guides, making vertical use preferable.

    Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinder

Telescopic hydraulic cylinders feature two or more stages of pistons. When extending, the pistons move from large to small, and when retracting under no load, the order is typically reversed. This design allows for longer strokes while maintaining a shorter retracted length and compact structure. Commonly employed in construction and agricultural machinery, telescopic cylinders enable multiple pistons to move simultaneously, resulting in variable output speed and force as each piston moves sequentially.

    Swing Hydraulic Cylinder

A swing hydraulic cylinder is a component that generates torque and enables reciprocating motion. It comes in various forms like single vane, double vane, and spiral swing. In the vane type, the stator block is fixed on the cylinder, and the vane is connected to the rotor. Based on the direction of oil intake, the vane drives the rotor to swing. The spiral swing type includes single and double spirals, with the latter being more common. In double spiral types, the linear motion of the piston is converted into a compound motion of linear and rotational motion, enabling swing motion.
